case 10- Sikkim, India, 2023

For a long time, citrus fruit – Citrus reticulata (Mandarin) has been cultivated in Sikkim. Mandarin orange and sweet orange are the most important citrus fruits, mostly grown as a cash crop to provide employment, income, and a market for local farmers. Despite these advantages, citrus fruit is prone to severe damage by fruit flies, and loss of income to citrus growers. The importance of fruit flies as pests has been noticed since the commercialization of agriculture.

North Sumatra, one of the major citrus production area in Indonesia, the fruit fly problem here has been seriously threatening the industry for years. Fruit damage rate(FDR) here has reached to 80% at an average level. 

Case 8- Digos City, Philippines, 2023

Digos, as the major city of mango production in Davao del Sur, around 50KM away from Davao, it is dubbed as the Mango Capital City of the Philippines. Fruit fly (Bactrocera dorsalis) is one of the major pests that has been a threat to the local industry. Every year, millions of mangos are damaged due to the infestation of fruit flies. According to the local farmers, the average Fruit Damage Rate in Digos is around 50% or even worse.
