Case 11 - Sharaqpur, Lahore, Pakistan, 2023

Fruit flies in Pakistan cause serious damage, causing losses of about US$200 million every year. Generally, the fruit fly damage rate in orchards is between 15% and 45%,some orchards are even 100% damaged in peak season. The main fruit fly species are Bactrocera dorsalis(Oriental fruit fly) and Bactrocera cucurbitae(Melon fly). Local growers do not have a good way to control fruit flies. Traditional chemical pesticides cannot fundamentally prevent fruit flies, and chemical agriculture will bring many negative effects, such as environmental hazards, resistance issues, cost issues, etc.

Due to market needs, we decided to launch an Area Wide Control Program (AWCP) demonstration with our local partners on 15 acres guava crop against Bactrocera dorsalis. Our purpose is to show the effect of Great Fruit Fly Bait through the trial to the farmers, and let them know the fruit fly issue can be solved through a new product and technology
Trial Site

Bait application:

1. Safe for Fruits only spot application (0.5-1 sq. mt. area/plant)
2. Less Labor intensive. One person can cover 25 acres/day, hence labor costs saved.
3. Easy to apply no need of special skill for application.
4. 3 liters of water required per acre.
5. Easy to mix, load and carry for spraying.

Fruit fly data comparison:

From the chart above we can see: Fruit flies trapped weekly in the trial plots are much less than neighboring orchards because of GFFB application.
The introduction of the Great Fruit Fly Bait (GFFB) showcased a viable solution, leading to a significant decrease in fruit fly prevalence rates, dropping from 30% to less than 5%. This resulted in a significant reduction in fruit damage rates. Farmers expressed high satisfaction with the outcomes, anticipating increased yields and economic benefits.
